How to use VNC

VNC (Virtual Network Computing) is a nice utility that will allow you to login, with a graphical environment, to romulus.amherst.edu, the college UNIX machine that we're using for our projects. This page will describe how to use it.

Getting the VNC viewer

If you are using a Mac or a Windows machine, click the appropriate link below to download VNC for your platform:

If you are interested in seeing more about VNC, including more complete software and, perhaps, newer versions, then you can visit the VNC home page.

Logging in with the VNC viewer

Once you've obtained the VNC viewer, logging in is straightforward. Run the program, and when asked for a machine to which to connect, type:

romulus.amherst.edu

You should then be presented with a graphical login window, just as you were in SMudd 112.

Is the VNC window that you're presented with particularly large or small? By changing just slightly the specification of machine to which to connect, you can get different VNC screen sizes. Try running the VNC viewer, and when asked to which machine to connect, you may enter one of the following depending on the size of the screen that you would like:

Try each one to see which fits your screen best.
