The textbook and its uses

The assigned readings listed below are meant to provide you reinforcement and a reference for the material discussed in lectures and used for projects. The textbook that we will use for this purpose is Bryant and O'Hallaron's, Computer Systems: A Programmer's Perspective (3^rd edition). You can find it new, used, and for rent on Amazon and the like.

The readings

The following topics are covered, more or less, in the given sections of the textbook. Note that there are some topics discussed in class that are not covered in the textbook, and there is additional information in the sections of the textbook listed below that we skipped over. So, consult your notes, and use your judgment:

• Overview of system structure, processes, memory, files: Sections 1.4 through 1.8.
• Memory hierarchy: Chapter 6.
• Libraries and linking: Parts of Chapter 7, primarily Sections 7.10 and 7.13.
• Virtual memory: Sections 9.1 through 9.6; 9.9 through 9.11.
• Files and file systems: Sections 10.1 through 10.4.
• Machine code: Chapter 3.
